Prestashop v/s Magento

Well i have used prestashop and magento , both for building e commerce sites. But i love prestashop more than magento . Here are the reasons:-

Speed

Prestashop is lighter than magento and loads fast. So a medium merchant can get an affordable server to run prestashop. But magento needs a high performance server for its smooth running.

For a merchant having 5000 products i would personally prefer prestashop . There are even sites with more than 10,000 products run in prestashop too.

Configurable products or Products with combinations (attributes)

The main problem i faced was creating configurable products in magento. Its very time consuming unless we buy a module to generate it.

But in prestashop there is a built in combination creator. Just give attributes like size, color etc and it will generate combinations based on that . So for products with various combinations it is easy to create all these in prestashop instead of magento.

Shipping and Carrier

Prestashop provides option to create custom shipping carriers . This is also a good part with prestashop.

Admin Page

Prestashop's admin page is quiet simple to understand even by a non technical person. I have two clients, one using prestashop and other using magento. The client with prestashop got his grip with one demo class but the magento client is still struggling.

Navigation Block. .

One of the main highlight of prestashop i noticed is that their layered navigation block.

You can add as much filters and attributes to make search simpler for customers with their layered navigation block. It too is a built in functionality in prestashop.

With this we can add as many attributes to layered block like size, color, memory, status, manufacture etc .

Quick Search Block

Prestashop comes with a quick search functionality with ajax listing which will show products and categories while we type into search field. In the admin panel there is setting for search typos and keywords like idop for ipod etc.
So when a customer types wrongly idop instead of ipod, it shows the exact product list

SEO

Dealing with SEO part magento is leading. All the essential seo areas are covered which will give you best results. But prestashop too can be made SEO friendly with using their setting wisely and choosing an seo friendly template.

Availability of Extension/Modules

Magento has larger users than prestashop thus its community is larger. Many free and paid modules are available too . Comparing to magento , prestahop has less users and community members. But it too has many users and many free and paid modules available in their addon sites.

All these listed things are based on my experience with both platforms. I wont say that prestashop  or magento is the best. It varies according to users point of view. Some will find prestashop handy but some others find magento. So choosing an ecommerce platform completely depends on your business activity, budget and taste. So before jumping in do a research and  try to use everything available and then reach a conclusion
